Coragil Cat breaks through a crowd to win Hanshin at Arlington

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. — Jim Tafel LLC’s Coragil Cat, who set an Arlington Polytrack record mile of 1:33.55 in his last start, burst through in midstretch and drew off to win the Grade III $100,000 Hanshin Stakes by three lengths on Saturday. Diego Sanchez rode the Greg Geier-trained son of Forest Wildcat, who covered the mile in 1:34.86.

The Hanshin was the third straight win for the 4-year-old colt, who captured the $53,000 Timeless Native Stakes…



Meal Penalty steals Arlington Classis

Meal Penalty was put on the grass for the first time and he stole the show in the Arlington Classic on Saturday at Arlington Park.

The 3-year-old son of Tale of the Cat had been on the Triple Crown trail earlier this year, but it appears he was racing on the wrong surface.



Mauralakana mows ‘em down in Sheepshead Bay

Elmont, N.Y. — Mauralakana used a devastating turn of foot at the quarter-pole to mow down early leader Herboriste inside the eighth-pole to win the Sheepshead Bay Handicap on Saturday at Belmont Park.

The daughter of Muhtathir (Great Britain) was sent off as the 3/2 favorite and showed why when she came from near the back of the pack rounding the second turn to put in her winning run.



A way to honor Eight Belles

Beware of conventional wisdom

I used to believe that conventional wisdom is an exclusively good thing.  Then I learned that the notion refers to ideas that are accepted as true, but that often lack evidence which would make them true in every circumstance.  In other words, conventional wisdom sometimes is flawed. 

Anyone who has ever tried to predict the outcome of a horse race is well aware of both the upside and downside of conventional wisdom.  Pari-mutuel

The television promos and 60-second mini-documentaries on the Kentucky Oaks and Derby do not do justice to the actual experience, as I learned on May 2nd and 3rd.  I’m talking here not about the performances of the magnificent thoroughbreds on the famed dirt oval but rather the performances that I saw in sections 221 and 320 at Churchill Downs.  Where did those guys get all those cream colored and blue saddle shoes?  I
