ARCADIA, Calif., — Desert Code, overlooked by the bettors at 35-1 but not by handicapper Bob Hill at tracksideview.com, came on late after wickedly fast fractions to win the Turf Sprint on Saturday at Santa Anita Park.

The 5-year-old son of E. Dubai did his daddy proud when he blew by Diabolical in the final strides to take the six-and-one-half-furlong race in 1:11.60, two-fifths off the downhill course record.

ARCADIA, Calif., — Zenyatta proved on Saturday at Santa Anita Park that no matter what the obstacle, she can overcome it. The Street Cry filly came from last in an eight-horse field to make at least that wide a move to run down the speed to claim the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic and remain unbeaten in nine lifetime races.

Ladies Day at the Breeders’ Cup

Arcadia, Calif., — Much about this year’s edition of the Breeders’ Cup is new.  For the first time, the races traditionally contested on dirt will be run on the Pro-Ride synthetic surface at Santa Anita.  Another major change is that all of the races for fillies and mares have been carded on Friday, Day 1 of the two-day affair.

Filly and Mare Sprint — This race has one component and it is speed. Dearest Trickski (9), Dream Rush (7), Indian Blessing (5) and Lady Sprinter (4) will have guns blazing as they spring from the gate. Speed kills most of the time and that may be the case here.
