The first condition book covers May 22 (opening day) through June 20. Average daily purses are expected to near $1 million for the summer season, which runs through Labor Day, Sept. 6. 



Blue Grass, Ashland fields taking shape at Keeneland

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Fields for Keeneland’s two marquee spring events for 3-year-olds are taking shape with six horses deemed probable for the Toyota Blue Grass (G1) on April 10 and seven fillies considered probable for Saturday’s Central Bank Ashland (G1), according to racing secretary Ben Huffman.

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Arnold Zetcher’s Zardana, the 6-year-old mare who shipped in to defeat reigning Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra in the $200,000 New Orleans Ladies, was named Horse of the Meet at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots’ 2009-2010 Thoroughbred Racing Season Presented by Miller Lite by a vote of media and racing officials following Sunday’s Closing Day program.

Speak Easy Gal held off a late charge by Lady Shakespeare to win the Grade 3 Orchid Stakes on Sunday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The four-year-old daughter of West Acre took the lead at the start in the mile-and-a-half race over a good turf course. She set fractions of 24.39, 50.47 and 1:16.35 under jockey Elvis Trujillo for six furlongs as she was tracked Celtic Princess.
