The are the post positions for the 138th Kentucky Derby to be run on Saturday, May 5 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. My picks for the race will appear either late Thursday, May 3 or early Friday, May 5.

The Derby will be race 11 and the post time is 6:24 p.m. EDT.

All the horses that are slated to run in the 138th Kentucky Derby were on the grounds at Churchill Downs by the 10 a.m. deadline for taking pre-entries, which totals 21. The starting gate will hold only 20 horses but this year also eligibles are allowed. The post-position draw will be held at 5 p.m. EDT at Churchill Downs.

Trainer Larry Jones said Tuesday (May 1) that Mark Valeski would not be entered in the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby and this would allow Optimizer into the 20-horse field.

Santa Anita Derby (GI) runner-up Creative Cause worked a half-mile in47.80 with regular exercise rider John Cisneros aboard Tuesday at Churchill Downs. Trainer Mike Harrington was pleased with the work. “It was perfect in my book. I wanted him to show he was on his game and he did it fairly easy.”

Sabercat worked four furlongs in 48.40, also at Churchill Downs.

Bodemeister dazzled people gathered at Churchill Downs Sunday morning when he worked five furlongs in 59.48 over a sloppy track. The son of Empire Maker went out shortly after the renovation break with stable mate Jemima’s Pearl. Reveron  has been withdrawn for consideration for the Derby because a left fore condylar fissure was detected following a one-mile workout in 1:46 over a sloppy track at Calder Casino & Race Course Saturday morning (April 21). Trinniberg, winner of the Grade 3 Swale and Grade 3 Bay Shore this year, will run in the Kentucky Derby, owner Shivananda Parbhoo said on Saturday.

Sesamoid injury knocks Secret Circle out of Roses’ hunt

Trainer Bob Baffert and owner Mike Pegram announced on April 19 that Secret Circle has a sesamoid injury and will miss up to four months. The son of Eddington was being pointed to the Kentucky Derby on May 5 at Churchill Downs. He was second in the Arkansas Derby on April 14 at Oaklawn Park and the injury was detected a few days later. Pegram said the injury would not require surgery.

Bodemeister may have stamped himself as the morning-line favorite in the Kentucky Derby after he dominated the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park. He went right to the lead and re-broke at the quarter-pole to run away and hide. Dullahan picked up the pieces in the Blue Grass after Hansen set very fast early fractions.
