A little more than a week ago it looked like trainer Bob Baffert was going to be on the outside looking in at this year’s Kentucky Derby. You must take a close look at We Miss Artie after his win in the Spiral Stakes Saturday at Turfway Park in northern Kentucky. Although I think he is a pure synthetic and turf horse, it seems that colts that run well on the Polytrack at Turfway and Keeneland seem to do well on the dirt at Churchill Downs.

Hoppertunity jumped to the second spot on the Kentucky Derby points list after he won the Grade 2 Rebel on March 15 at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark. The son of Any Given Saturday has 55 points. Tamarando used a late surge to take the Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby Saturday at Golden Gate in Northern California. Dance With Fate was second, with Enterprising third and Puppy Manners was fourth.

Samraat remained unbeaten Saturday when he won the Grade 3 Withers at Aqueduct Racetrack in Ozone Park, N.Y. The 3-year-old son of Noble Causeway dueled with Uncle Sigh for most of the race and pulled off in the final sixteenth of a mile to win by a length.
