Race 11, Churchill Downs – Kentucky Oaks G1 – 1 1/8 miles for three-year-old fillies – post time: 5:45 p.m. EDT

A full field of 14 three-year-old fillies will go to post in the 138th running of the Kentucky Oaks on Friday at Churchill Downs.  I see seven in the field as possible winners, with the others probably needing to wait for another day to stand in the winner’s circle.

As we rapidly approach the Oaks and Derby days, Churchill Downs doesn’t miss a beat with Thursday’s 10th, an optional-claiming contest for three-year-olds and up sprinting six furlongs on the main track. This third-level affair offers a purse of 60k, with the winners share making for a good time this weekend. A field of eight are scheduled to start, so let’s break ‘em down.

The ninth and feature from Churchill is a 100k optional claiming turf contest, where none are in for the tag, and has more “other than” conditions than the current tax code. The field of eight serves up several stakes players who’ll do battle at a mile and for a purse of 65k. Let’s get started.

As our “boots on the ground” coverage of the 138th Run for Roses begins, that’s where our first selection of the week will come from, and given the expected inclement weather forecast, we’ll stay on the main track for the eighth on the card, a six furlong allowance sprint for fillies and mares. Many of today’s starters may face their first attempt on a “off” track, let’s see who can handle the conditions.…

Well folks it’s that time of year, where the wannabe’s, could haves, should haves, sheiks, cowboys and pretenders all gravitate to horse racing’s mecca, Churchill Downs for the 138th Run For The Roses. I’m stuck in New Orleans having to deal with the Jazz Fest and the likes of Bruce Springsteen and the Beach Boys, and frankly it’s killing me, but as the senior staff of Tracksideview, Ron Correll and Bob Hill, make…

Race 8 – Hollywood Park – Snow Chief – 1 1/8 miles for three-year-olds bred in California – post time: 7:40 p.m. EDT

With a healthy purse of $300k the Snow Chief has attracted a field of 10 three-year-olds, all of whom will try the 9-furlong distance for the first time.  There are many unknown factors in this race as the Southern California racing moves from Santa Anita’s real dirt main…
