Ortiz Jr. hopes to follow in footsteps of famous Puerto Rican jockeys

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Apprentice Irad Ortiz, Jr. has a long way to go if he wants to emulate famous Puerto Rican jockeys Eddie Belmonte, Angel Cordero, Jr., and John Velazquez, but winning 70 races from 630 mounts on The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) circuit in 2011 was a pretty good start.
Originally from Trujillo Alto in Puerto Rico, Ortiz is a graduate of that country’s Escuela Vocacional Hípica, a school for prospective jockeys.…
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Jose Lezcano didn’t need to wait for more than a single race to achieve success at GulfstreamPark, having won aboard his very first mount in the U.S. at the world class thoroughbred meeting in April 2004.
The National Thoroughbred Racing Association, Daily Racing Form and the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters named Bill Mott as the 2011 Eclipse Award Trainer of the Year and Ramon Dominguez as Jockey of the Year Monday at the 41st annual Eclipse Awards at the Beverly Wilshire, in Beverly Hills, Calif. Kyle Frey was named the Eclipse Award Apprentice Jockey of the Year.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Jockey Alan Garcia was released from North Shore University Hospital Saturday afternoon after tests came back negative following a spill in the fourth race at Aqueduct Racetrack. Pending final clearance from NYRA First Aid, he is likely to ride Sunday as scheduled.
