INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Rafael Bejarano, fresh from a four-win day, came right back with a victory he won’t soon forget aboard Crisp on Thursday at Hollywood Park.
The 2-year-old filly bolted on the turn for home, dropped back and seemed to be out of contention, but regained her stride and rallied to catch Fashion Trend in deep stretch to register her first victory in her second start.
Bejarano, who rode two winners on the card to give him six in two days, was surprised as he had no trouble when he rode Crisp to a third-place finish in her career debut in mid-November.
“Last time she didn’t do anything wrong,” he said. “Today . . . the first turn she tried to go straight and the second turn, definitely, she was out of control. I hit her a couple of times and finally she switched leads and started running straight. I was almost last, but she gave me a big kick. I knew she was the best horse in the race.”
Crisp, owned by Michael Talla and trained by John Sadler, covered 1 1/16 miles on Cushion Track in 1:45.62 while paying $6 as the 2-1 favorite in the field of six maiden fillies. A $160,000 yearling purchase, she banked $22,800.
