Trainer Bill Mott and Winstar Farm took a step along the early 2010 Kentucky Derby trail when Drosselmeyer won a mile-and-an-eighth allowance race Sunday at Gulfsream Park in South Florida.
The son of Distorted Humor sat in fourth early as Jet Settin Papa and then No Shenanigans controlled the pace with fractions of ;22.84, :46.97 and 1:11.33 for six furlongs.
Drosselmeyer moved closer as he rounded the second turn and was in second at the top of the stretch with Best Actor to beat. Jockey Kent Desormeaux turned Drosselmeyer loose straightening for home and he easily pulled away from Best Actor. Desormeaux wrapped up on Drosselmeyer inside the eighth and the colt cruised to a one-and-three-quarter length win in a time of 1:49.52. Prince Will I Am got up for second and Best Actor settled for third.
The colt had been off since Nov. 18 when he broke his maiden at Churchill Downs in his fourth try.
The betting public sent Drosselmeyer off as the 4/5 favorite and he returned $3.80, $2.80 and $2.60.
