***** Graded stakes winning talent
*** For sprint and distance both – falls into miler category
Ratings are assigned according to how a horse compares to the rest of the field in a given race. They are based upon pedigree strength, precociousness, surface preferences, speed and stamina influences, and the horse’s works or previous races.
Frizette was a hard-knocking race mare who had some talent early on, but ran mainly in claiming races in her 3-year-old year. Sent to France, she was retired to the breeding shed where she became one of the most important foundation matrons of the 20th century. Some of the memorable champions her daughters produced are Myrtlewood (whose line produced Seattle Slew) Miss Dogwood (third dam of Mr. Prospector) and La Troienne (too many to count!). Sadly, after not producing a foal for two years, Frizette was culled from the broodmare band at the age of 24 and sent to slaughter.
Frizette lives on in her many descendants and is only fitting that a number of them have won this race named in her honor, including Myrtle’s Jet, Tudor Queen, Numbered Account and Princess Rooney.
D. Wayne Lukas has won this race a record six times. Hot on his heels is Shug McGaughey who could even the score today.
The Champagne is the oldest stakes for 2-year-olds in the country and, derives its name from the English event. First run in 1867, this race has been a factor in deciding 2-year-old honors. Many winners have gone on to the Classics, including Count Fleet, Riva Ridge (his stable mate, Secretariat, would finish second the following year), Foolish Pleasure, Seattle Slew, Alydar, Spectacular Bid, Easy Goer, Sea Hero and Birdstone.
Nick Zito has won this race six times, including last year with War Pass.

MISS OCEAN CITY (Mineshaft – Madam Lagonza, by Kingmambo) Sire is a known stamina influence and his progeny generally need time to mature. Dam sire is one of the top turf sires in the world. Dam is an unraced half to two stakes winners and this filly is a half sister to turf route stakes winning Woodlander. This filly has an interesting “mirror image” pedigree. Mineshaft has Seattle Slew over Mr. Prospector in his second generation. Madam Lagonza has Mr. Prospector over Seattle Slew in her second generation. This filly has excellent speed, but should improve with maturity and as distances get longer. She should be an especially good on the turf. She won her debut by three-and-three-quarter lengths over Pumpkin Shell who ran fifth in the recent Miss Grillo Stakes and over Persistently, who is entered in this race. Miss Ocean City tired to sixth after setting the pace in the Grade 2 Matron in her last start and had a bullet four-furlong work last week.

WHO DO I LIKE?
It is very difficult to separate the two fillies in this race with experience at a mile, but I’ll give the nod to Pyro’s little sister, WAR ECHO, She beat a better class of fillies than second choice, SKY DIVA. Stalker PERSISTENTLY will enjoy getting more distance. COFFEE IN BED has won past a mile and could be an overlooked longshot.

BREAK WATER EDISON (Lemon Drop Kid – August Storm, by Storm Creek) While he was talented enough to win the Grade 1 Futurity Stakes and place in the Champagne Stakes, Belmont winner Lemon Drop Kid’s offspring often need some time to mature and prefer races longer than a mile. Dam sire is a Grade 3 winning son of Storm Cat. His offspring tend to be win early sprinter/milers. Dam won the Hollywood Wildcat stakes going a mile and a sixteenth on turf. Break Water Edison has turf breeding top and bottom, but he won his debut gong five-and-a-half furlongs on the dirt at Belmont then followed up with a third place finish in the Saratoga Special and finished fourth in the Grade 1 Hopeful behind Vineyard Haven, Cribnote and Munnings.

Expect his offspring to develop rapidly, but improve even more with maturity and as the distances increase. Dam sire was a Grade 2 winner at two and known for getting speedy, precocious types. Dam is a half sister to graded stakes winner D’Or Ruckus. Expect Cribnote to improve as he goes longer distances. He finished second to Vineyard Haven in the Grade 1 Hopeful after bearing out far enough for his jockey to grab a beer and hot dog from the grandstand. He’s had two bullet works and adds blinkers for this race.

WHO DO I LIKE?
This talented well bred field will be hard to separate as none of these colts have experience beyond seven furlongs. Provided everyone breaks well, Vineyard Haven should have company up front in the form of wicked fast A.P. Cardinal, Ventana, and Brave Victory. I’m inclined to go with a closer in this race, and No Biz Like Shobiz’s little bro, HELLO BROADWAY closed with an awesome rush in his debut and could be overlooked in the betting. GONE ASTRAY also had a nice closing kick as does GIROLAMO. What to do with Munnings and Cribnote? They certainly have talent and will probably go off at shorter odds than the horses I picked but I wouldn’t overlook them in your betting strategies.
