Graded Stakes action continues at Santa Anita with the running of the Grade 2 San Luis Rey Stakes. A short gate of five will take to the turf and compete at the extended route of a mile-and-a-half, it’s listed as the fourth on the card, so let’s get started.

Race 4 – Santa Anita – post time: 5 p.m. EDT

Vagabond Shoes (1), Sadler/Espinoza; multiple Graded Stakes winner rallied from near the rear to take the Grade 2 San Marcos last month, a contest run at the “classic” route. Therein maybe his only weakness, the distance; regardless, this gelded son of Beat Hollow brings it every time out and will today.

Niagara Falls (2), Biancone/Bejarano; by Giant’s Causeway, his best efforts have been at this route, and though there’s little that impresses me about trainer Patrick Biancone, he of cobra venom infamy, I do like how he’s worked this 5-year-old long in the a.m.’s.

Lucayan (3), Drysdale/Smith; rail foe has had this 5-year-olds number of late, including last out in the San Marcos; however he was bringing it late and that’s where today’s extra distance works for this son of Irish-sire Turtle Bowl.

Fire With Fire (4), Drysdale/Baze; was a willing third in this a year ago, however since that start, his successes have come mostly against lesser. Should super wagering be available, include.

Temeraine (5), Proctor/Stevens; Kentucky Turf Cup winner has competed and won at this level and distance, yet it’s that last out in the San Marcos that has me concerned, never factoring to finish eighth. He’s another that knows the company, but he’ll have to take it to another level to get the top spot.

It’s going to be hard to make a dollar with this bunch, but let’s take a shot with Hall of Fame rider Mike Smith giving Lucayan a Hall of Fame ride, and use him in a straight up exacta over Vagabond Shoes; add the field for deeper exotics. Rick’s selection: 3 over 1.
