Fillies and mares highlight the Thursday feature from Fair Grounds, as a field of seven will sprint over the main track in an optional-claiming test. Let’s get started.

Race 9 – Fair Grounds – post time: 6:25 p.m. EDT

Tight Britches (1), Broberg/Landeros; 6-year-old has won six straight, all against considerably lesser. Trainer Karl Broberg’s stock has been hot of late, and this is one of his strong spots, but it’s also a strong step-up.

Aunt Lois (2), Leggio/Albarado; La.-bred has won or placed in her last five dating back to August; however facing tougher last out, she was caught late by a next out winner. Ford Every Stream filly has the skills to win this, and she’ll be part of all my plays.

In Kelly’s Defense (3), Amoss/Napravnik; filly out of First Defence starts today for the Moss/Amoss/Napravnik team after being claimed off a hard closing show effort two weeks ago. Amoss is 32 percent with his firsts after the claim, and with Rosie, they’re almost 40 percent.

I Jus Wana Hav Fun (4), Johnston/Graham; this Private Vow filly also debuts for a new trainer, Eddie Johnston, who is equally tough with his firsts following the claim, 29 percent. After setting the pace in her last two, 4-year-old faded in each, so look for her new rider James Graham to set just off the early speed.

Dreamingofcarmella (5), Calhoun/Goncalves; new Fair Grounds Hall of Fame inductee Bret Calhoun returns the shades to this Harlan’s Holiday girl, a move he’s had zero success with this meet. Filly hasn’t hit the board in her last five; Calhoun will get her right, but it won’t be today.

Platinum Song (6), Pish/Eramia; lone entry in for the claim, exits a pair of non-threatening Houston starts after posting her best effort in a year, taking OC 15’s here in December. I look for this Texas-bred to flourish this summer, just in Texas.

Lucky Mary G. (7), Montano/Bridgmohan; Forestry filly delivered a hand ride win as the fave over similar in an off-the-turf start late last month. I’d be careful here, as this 4-year-old tired in three of her previous four.

I don’t see an exacta paying much, so I’ll use Aunt Lois, Tight Britches, I Jus Wana Hav Fun, and In Kelly’s Defense in tri and super boxes. Rick’s selections: 2, 1, 4, and 3.
